Jammu and Kashmir Deports 150 Illegal Bangladeshi Nationals
Jammu and Kashmir authorities began deporting illegal Bangladeshi nationals on October 5, transporting the first group of 150 people to West Bengal for pushback.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir began the deportation of Bangladeshi nationals found illegally residing in the Union Territory on October 5, 2026. In the first phase of the operation, 150 individuals were transported via a special Indian Air Force aircraft from Srinagar to Bagdogra, West Bengal, where they were handed over to the Border Security Force for final pushback to Bangladesh.
This action follows a verification drive and survey conducted by the administration and Jammu and Kashmir Police, which identified approximately 600 illegal Bangladeshi nationals across various districts in the Kashmir Valley. A second batch of 150 individuals is scheduled for deportation on October 7.
The crackdown aligns with a mandate from the Ministry of Home Affairs' High-Level Committee on Demographic Change (HLCDC). Established on May 26 and led by retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar, the committee is tasked with scientifically assessing demographic shifts caused by illegal immigration. The HLCDC is currently collecting time-series data from states and Union Territories to recommend specific policy and legislative measures to address these shifts.
