CFPB Adopts Light-Touch Oversight Under Trump Administration Pressure
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has reduced financial industry examinations and implemented lenient expedited reviews following pressure from the Donald Trump administration.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has shifted to a light-touch approach to financial industry oversight, granting a clean bill of health to most companies inspected this year. More than half of all examinations were processed as expedited reviews, a lenient track typically reserved for minor lapses that avoids escalation to legal or enforcement teams.
This regulatory shift follows pressure from the Donald Trump administration, which suspended most agency work upon taking office and attempted to cut two-thirds of the workforce. To implement this direction, the agency reduced the total number of examinations by half and shifted its focus away from student loans and nonbanks toward mortgages. Examiners were also required to recite a humility pledge.
Former agency officials warn that these changes expose consumers to preventable harm. Some suggest that political leadership may be instructing career staff to ignore violations or that the agency is simply examining the wrong companies. The administration maintains that previous oversight was too onerous and hindered economic growth.
