CD Interest Rates Rise Ahead of Federal Reserve Meeting
Savers are seeing increased returns on one-year and 18-month certificates of deposit as markets anticipate a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September.
Interest rates for certificates of deposit have climbed since May, offering higher guaranteed returns for savers. For a one-year CD, a $150,000 deposit can now earn between $6,300 and $6,450, reflecting top market rates of 4.20% to 4.30%. This marks an increase from May, when a 4.10% rate yielded approximately $6,150.
The Federal Reserve System is expected to meet in September to determine future rate adjustments. Data from the CME Group's FedWatch tool indicates a greater than 60% probability of an interest rate hike, suggesting the potential for further increases in CD yields.
Savers investing $100,000 in 18-month CDs can currently secure rates between 4.20% and 4.35%, resulting in returns between $6,365.69 and $6,595.45 upon maturity. These fixed returns significantly outperform traditional savings accounts, which average a 0.38% interest rate. While these accounts protect the principal against market volatility, they carry costly early withdrawal penalties for large deposits.
