Trump Administration Issues 100 Subpoenas to Probe Noncitizen Voting
The Government of the United States is issuing over 100 subpoenas to state and local officials to identify noncitizens who may have voted illegally.
The Government of the United States has issued more than 100 subpoenas to state and local election officials across at least a dozen states to identify noncitizens who may have voted illegally. The campaign targets both Democratic strongholds, including Los Angeles and Philadelphia, and competitive Republican-leaning states such as Georgia, Texas, and Kansas. At least 44 of these subpoenas were issued via grand juries, linking the effort to active criminal investigations.
Simultaneously, the United States Department of Justice has increased prosecutions of noncitizens who cast ballots. The department has already charged eight individuals in Minnesota and 28 legal permanent residents in California. In California, federal officials alleged that 20,000 likely noncitizens received mail ballots. While the White House maintains that noncitizen voting is a significant issue, Reuters and other studies indicate such instances are rare.
Complementing these federal actions, the American Center for Law and Justice obtained a noncitizen voter registry from Cheverly, Maryland, through a lawsuit. An investigation by the organization found that approximately 25% of the 98 individuals on that local registry appear to have voted in federal and statewide elections between 2020 and 2024. These findings have been referred to federal law enforcement for investigation into potential voter fraud or official incompetence.
