Volkswagen Plans to Close Four German Plants by 2034
Volkswagen Group plans to shut down four German production plants and divest several holdings to counter a projected drop in global car sales.
The management board of Volkswagen Group plans to propose the closure of four production plants in Germany between 2031 and 2034. According to a supervisory board paper cited by WirtschaftsWoche, the company intends to end production at the Emden and Zwickau plants in 2031, the Hanover plant in 2032, and the Neckarsulm plant in 2034.
These closures are part of a broader restructuring effort as the company expects global sales to fall to 8.5 million cars in 2026. In addition to the plant shutdowns, the company is considering extensive divestments, which include selling or reducing its stakes in holdings such as Ducati, Traton, Gotion, QuantumScape, and SGL Carbon.
The supervisory board is scheduled to meet this Friday to discuss these proposals. A company spokesperson has declined to comment on the specific contents of the board documents.
