Cyber-Attacks Target European Refrigeration Systems and Binance
Coordinated cyber-attacks targeted commercial refrigeration systems across Europe while North Korean actors allegedly stole $6.3 billion from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange.
A series of coordinated cyber-attacks recently targeted commercial refrigeration systems across Europe, including the United Kingdom, Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The attackers exploited default passwords and end-of-life software in outdated operating systems from providers such as Danfoss and Copeland, causing temperatures in some units to reach 50C.
These infrastructure attacks occurred alongside other major security breaches. The cryptocurrency exchange Binance suffered a record $6.3 billion heist attributed to the Government of North Korea. Simultaneously, residents of Kyiv, Ukraine, received a fake nuclear strike alert via an emergency application.
Richard Horne, head of the National Cyber Security Centre, warned that these incidents signal a rise in the volume of attacks facilitated by AI-discovered vulnerabilities. While some experts identified Russian hallmarks in the refrigeration attacks, others noted that both state actors and opportunistic hackers are increasingly targeting legacy internet-connected devices to create psychological disruption. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting urged national preparation for state-sponsored terrorism targeting critical infrastructure.
