Mayor Mamdani Reforms NYPD Oversight After Officer Avoids Trial
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced NYPD oversight and use-of-force reforms after an officer retired to avoid a disciplinary trial for a 2024 fatal shooting.
Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, announced reforms to the New York Police Department's oversight and use-of-force policies on Monday. The measures come after Officer Salvatore Alongi retired with a full pension, avoiding a disciplinary trial for the 2024 death of 19-year-old Win Rozario. The NYPD failed to notify the Civilian Complaint Review Board of Alongi's retirement status, which stalled the legal process.
The new reforms establish a notification system to ensure disciplinary processes are completed before officers retire, increase funding for the Office of the Inspector General, and mandate a review of use-of-force policies. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch attributed the failure to notify the review board to human error.
While the Civilian Complaint Review Board continues the trial of a second officer, Matthew Cianfrocco, the parents of Win Rozario expressed disgust over Alongi's retirement. Patrick Hendry, president of the police officers' union, criticized the reforms as an attempt to appease the mayor's radical base and argued that the use-of-force review would not make the city safer.
