Mayor Zohran Mamdani Backs Socialist Slate to Reshape Democratic Party

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed a slate of democratic socialist candidates at a Brooklyn rally to push for fundamental changes within the Democratic Party.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is leveraging his political influence to shift the Democratic Party toward democratic socialism by backing a slate of candidates in upcoming New York primaries. At a get-out-the-vote rally in Brooklyn on Thursday, Mamdani appeared alongside Senator Bernie Sanders to endorse candidates including Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier.

These candidates are challenging Democratic incumbents with a platform that includes taxing the wealthy, abolishing ICE, and adopting a harder stance against Israel's actions in Gaza. Mamdani argued that the party's current leadership has focused on managing decline rather than delivering material change for working people.

The move has created a proxy fight with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is campaigning for the embattled incumbents. While Jeffries and Mamdani have avoided public conflict to protect the party from Republican narratives, the National Republican Congressional Committee is actively attempting to use Mamdani's socialist branding to paint Democrats in swing districts as radicals. Allies of the mayor maintain that his approach energizes the electorate and serves as a political asset.
