Cathie Wood Urges Investors to Track AI Agent Spending

ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood advises investors to track AI agent financial flows as a key value indicator amid a battle over payment infrastructure.

ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood urged investors to follow the agents during the Robinhood Summit in Houston, arguing that tracking the flow of money managed by AI software will become a critical investment signal. Wood suggests that AI is set to leverage human productivity and that monitoring agent adoption will help identify future revenue streams.

Financial infrastructure is currently split between open rails and established incumbents. Coinbase is positioning itself as a leader in machine-to-machine micropayments through its x402 system and Base network, noting that over 90% of onchain agentic commerce settles in USDC. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong identified Elon Musk's Grok as the leading client for agentic traders on the platform, while Musk has promoted Grok as a personal chief financial officer capable of connecting to bank and brokerage accounts.

Established firms including Visa, Google, and Stripe are developing competing agent payment systems. Visa launched Intelligent Commerce Connect in April 2026 to provide secure payment initiation and spend controls. While industry forecasts suggest AI finance agents could process $3-5 trillion by 2030, critics like SharpLink co-CEO Joseph Chalom warn that users must have spending caps and audit trails to prevent a few companies from controlling fund movements.
