India and China Exchange Claims Over Border Patrolling Face-Offs

India and China disagree over patrolling patterns along the Line of Actual Control following reports of military face-offs in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China exchanged conflicting accounts on October 26 regarding military activities along the Line of Actual Control. The dispute follows reports of face-offs between forces in Arunachal Pradesh.

Indian officials stated that stability in the border regions is periodically disturbed when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Indian ministry, emphasized that maintaining peace and tranquility in these areas is essential for the development of bilateral relations.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry asserted that its troops have strictly abided by bilateral agreements and conducted only routine patrols to safeguard territorial sovereignty. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun called on India to take concrete steps to maintain peace along the border.

Both nations continue to utilize diplomatic and military channels to resolve outstanding issues and prevent miscalculations. These mechanisms include the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination and the Special Representative talks, the most recent of which occurred in Beijing on August 25 to seek a mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question.
