Lebanon Reviews Security Bans for 600,000 Syrians

Lebanon's General Directorate of General Security is reviewing security restrictions against 600,000 Syrians to improve relations with Damascus and formalize border entry.

The General Directorate of General Security in Lebanon has launched legal procedures to review and potentially lift security restrictions affecting approximately 600,000 Syrians. These restrictions largely originated from residency or entry violations during the Syrian civil war and have prevented hundreds of thousands of individuals from entering Lebanon for several years.

General Security chief Hassan Choucair established a committee to examine individual files, with tens of thousands of cases already processed. The initiative seeks to reset relations between Beirut and Damascus by prioritizing security coordination, legal foundations, and a crackdown on illegal people smuggling across the border.

Under the new guidelines, Syrians may enter Lebanon via travel agencies or by presenting identification papers, provided they meet specific requirements. Those intending to work in Lebanon must now obtain legal residency and official work permits. The Government of Lebanon intends to inform the Government of Syria of the results of these security reviews as part of the broader diplomatic effort.
