TotalEnergies and Mistral Launch $115 Million AI Partnership

TotalEnergies and Mistral launched a three-year partnership valued at more than $115 million to develop artificial intelligence models for oil and gas reservoir exploration, characterization, and development. The collaboration establishes a joint scientific laboratory that combines nearly a century of geoscience knowledge and approximately 10 petaflops of subsurface data with Mistral's AI technology.

The program leverages agentic AI to process large data volumes and optimize existing projects, creating proprietary tools to support experts in complex decision-making. Both companies stated the initiative is intended to strengthen the European digital ecosystem while protecting industrial intellectual property.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, noted that AI can create significant value in exploration and reservoir engineering. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch said the project demonstrates the ability of AI models to support complex industrial processes and adapt to demanding scientific and energy challenges.
