American Airlines Caps Elite Upgrades on Long-Haul Routes

American Airlines will implement a new complimentary upgrade policy for AAdvantage elite status members on specific transcontinental and Hawaii routes beginning August 25, 2026. Under the new rules, travelers holding Main Cabin tickets on widebody aircraft or A321T/XLR models will no longer be eligible for complimentary upgrades directly into Business Class.

Instead, these upgrades will be capped at Premium Economy. The policy affects flights from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles and San Francisco, Boston to Los Angeles and San Francisco, and routes from Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Chicago to Hawaii.

Elite flyers can still access Business Class if they purchase a Premium Economy ticket initially, buy an Instant Upgrade, or if Premium Economy is unavailable on the aircraft. Systemwide Upgrades remain unaffected by the change.
