JetBlue Airways Increases Checked Bag Fees Amid Rising Fuel Costs

JetBlue Airways raised checked bag fees for economy passengers to offset doubling jet fuel prices linked to the war in Iran.

JetBlue Airways increased its checked bag fees on November 3, citing rising fuel and operating costs. The airline is the first major U.S. carrier to raise baggage charges since the outbreak of the war in Iran in February, a conflict that contributed to jet fuel prices approximately doubling this year.

For economy passengers, the first bag now costs between $50 and $70, depending on the travel period and payment timing. Fees reach $70 during peak travel dates if paid less than 24 hours before departure. Second bags are priced at $70 off-peak and $75 during peak periods, while third bags cost $200. On transatlantic flights to Europe, the first bag fee for basic economy tickets rose from $60 to $80 each way.

Fee exemptions remain in place for elite frequent flyer members, co-branded credit card holders, and passengers traveling in BlueFirst or JetBlue Mint cabins.
