Microsoft Addresses AI Emissions Rise and Local Opposition

Microsoft Corp. is working to mitigate internal and external backlash over the environmental and social costs of its AI infrastructure. In a memo to staff, development chief Noelle Walsh acknowledged that the company's carbon emissions rose 25% in 2025, a trend that is hindering Microsoft's ability to meet its previous emissions commitments.

To address these concerns, Walsh highlighted improvements in water usage effectiveness and announced plans to integrate up to 40 gigawatts of renewable power globally. The company has also modified its approach to local community relations. As of January, Microsoft pledged to stop seeking property tax breaks and will cover its own energy costs to ensure that residents do not face electricity price hikes.

These measures come as the tech industry faces intensifying local resistance. Data Center Watch reported that approximately 75 projects, valued at $130 billion, were blocked or delayed in early 2026 due to community opposition.
