Japanese Brokerage CEOs Project Nikkei 225 to Hit 80,000

CEOs of Nomura Holdings and Daiwa Securities Group forecast the Nikkei 225 will reach 80,000 or higher by 2027, citing AI investment as the primary driver.

The CEOs of Japan's leading securities firms project that the domestic stock market rally will persist into 2027. Speaking at a Nikkei event in Tokyo, Kentaro Okuda of Nomura Holdings and Akihiko Ogino of Daiwa Securities Group both forecast the Nikkei 225 reaching at least 80,000, though they differ on the timeline.

Ogino expects the index to hit 80,000 within this year and peak at 88,000 by late 2027. Okuda provides a more conservative estimate, projecting 75,000 by year-end and 80,000 by the end of 2027. Regarding currency, Ogino anticipates the yen will trade around 160 per dollar, while Okuda projects 156 per dollar by the end of the year.

Both executives identified a potential reversal in artificial intelligence investment as the primary risk to this growth. They noted that public opposition to AI and data centers in the United States could trigger a shift in investor sentiment, which might reverse the current trend driving corporate earnings and stock prices.
