SpaceX to Launch Nvidia AI Data Centers into Orbit

Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will launch Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 AI computers into orbit in the fourth quarter of 2027. The initiative, called the Starmind program, seeks to establish orbital AI data centers to avoid terrestrial land acquisition issues and community opposition while utilizing continuous solar power and more efficient cooling.

Musk stated that SpaceX will build this infrastructure exclusively on Nvidia hardware, calling the Vera Rubin architecture the best available design. The long-term vision includes deploying up to one million orbital data centers, with some projections suggesting a capacity of 75 gigawatts by 2031.

Execution of the program depends on the reliability of the Starship rocket system and the resolution of engineering hurdles regarding heat dissipation in a vacuum and radiation hardening. Following the announcement, Nvidia shares rose, while SpaceX shares initially declined as investors weighed the high capital intensity and execution risks of the project.
