South Africa FDI Inflows Rise to $3.03 Billion
The South African Reserve Bank reported foreign direct investment inflows of $3.03 billion in the second quarter of 2026, driven by telecommunications debt funding.
The South African Reserve Bank reported that foreign direct investment inflows reached $3.03 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents a significant increase from the $1.24 billion recorded during the first quarter of the year.
Bank officials attributed the growth to debt funding provided to a local telecommunications company by a non-resident parent company. The bank did not name the specific company involved, citing the private nature of the transaction.
While direct investment grew, portfolio investments shifted toward an outflow between April and June. Non-residents sold $2.08 billion in domestic equity securities, though they acquired $1.53 billion in domestic debt securities. This acquisition was partially offset by the national government's redemption of a $1.25 billion international bond.
