Stokes County Approves Project Delta Hyperscale Data Center

The Stokes County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 on Monday night to rezone approximately 1,800 acres of farmland in Walnut Cove for Project Delta. Developed by Engineered Land Solutions, the hyperscale data center project had previously received approval in January, but that decision was voided following a legal challenge and procedural error.

Supporters of the project, including Commissioner Keith Wood, argued the facility would provide essential jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue to fund schools and emergency services without raising taxes. The vote followed a dispute over whether Commissioner Wood should recuse himself due to stock holdings in CMC Rebar, a potential supplier, though the County Attorney ruled no legal conflict existed.

Opponents, including Chairman Wayne Barneycastle and Commissioner Brad Chandler, raised concerns regarding noise pollution, water consumption, and the preservation of the area's rural character. While developer Drew Nations stated the project does not seek corporate welfare or incentives, the Southern Environmental Law Center released an analysis suggesting the project will generate less tax revenue than estimated.
