JD Vance Defines Socialism While Suspending Microsoft Visa Sponsorship
Vice President JD Vance suspended Microsoft from a foreign worker sponsorship program and defined socialism as replacing American workers with foreigners and allowing boys in girls' sports.
Vice President JD Vance announced on Thursday that the federal government is suspending Microsoft from the Program for Employment for Nationals (PERM). This Department of Labor initiative allows employers to sponsor skilled foreign workers, including H-1B visa holders, for permanent residency. The administration based the suspension on allegations of fraud.
During the announcement, Vance provided a non-traditional definition of socialism when questioned by a reporter. He stated that in the American context, socialism means wanting to "replace American workers with foreign workers" and wanting "boys to play in girls' sports." Vance argued that while classical socialism is associated with prioritizing workers, modern self-described socialists in the U.S. would oppose the administration's efforts to prioritize domestic labor over foreign workers.
The comments drew widespread criticism and mockery from journalists, political strategists, and conservative figures including Pedro L. Gonzalez and former congressman Justin Amash. Critics argued that Vance ignored classical economic theories of state or worker control of production to instead label policies he dislikes. A representative from the Cato Institute noted that a literal definition of socialism might actually apply to government ownership stakes taken by the Trump administration.
