Senior Citizens League Projects 3.6% Social Security COLA for 2027

The Senior Citizens League estimates a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 Social Security benefits, driven by rising inflation and fuel prices.

The Senior Citizens League updated its projection for the 2027 Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), estimating a benefit increase of 3.6%. This figure is 0.2% lower than the organization's previous prediction but remains higher than the 2.8% increase implemented in 2026. The organization's broader forecast range for the adjustment sits between 3.3% and 3.8%.

Based on the average monthly retirement benefit of $2,086 as of July 2026, a 3.6% adjustment would add approximately $75 per month, raising the average to $2,161. These projections are driven by rising inflation, import tariffs, and higher fuel prices resulting from conflict involving Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

While a higher COLA increases monthly checks, the actual financial gain for retirees may be offset by rising everyday expenses and potential increases in Medicare Part B premiums. The final COLA depends on average third-quarter inflation data, specifically trends in August and September. The Social Security Administration is scheduled to officially announce the 2027 COLA on October 14, 2026.
