Iran Wins IAEA Committee Seat Despite Travel Ban on Official

The Government of Iran secured a seat on the organizing committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during the agency's general conference in Vienna. The appointment occurred despite objections from the United States, with whom Iran has been at war since February 2026. The IAEA remains deadlocked on nuclear safety and security issues as the conflict between Washington and Tehran hinders diplomatic consensus on global nuclear threats.

Simultaneously, a UN sanctions committee denied a travel ban exemption for Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, preventing his attendance at the conference. The Government of Austria had requested the exemption, but the ban remains in place following the restoration of sanctions via a snapback mechanism triggered by France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. While the state news agency IRNA claimed Eslami had already departed Tehran, reports indicate he is not expected to attend.

Iranian Ambassador Reza Najafi condemned the exclusion, stating the denial of access contravenes the legal framework of the agency and criticizing Austria for failing its responsibilities as a host country. These tensions follow a June 2025 conflict in which the United States and Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities, resulting in a breakdown of IAEA inspections and uncertainty regarding Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
