Modders Leak Nvidia DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Technology
Modders extracted Nvidia's unreleased DLSS 5 technology from NBA 2K27 and implemented it into several games, resulting in severe performance drops and polarizing visual results.
Modders from the RenoDX community leaked and implemented an experimental version of Nvidia's unreleased DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology after discovering a 158 MB library, nvngx_dlssnr.dll, within an early-access build of NBA 2K27. The technology, which Nvidia showcased at SIGGRAPH 2026 and plans to officially release this autumn, uses AI to infer lighting, materials, and visual characteristics to enhance photorealism.
Members of the modding community injected the tool into various titles, including Control, The Last of Us Part 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Early testing reveals a severe performance penalty on RTX 50 series graphics cards. In Control, frame rates on an RTX 5090 dropped from 91 fps to 50 fps, while an RTX 5070 Ti saw drops from 71 fps to 35 fps in other tests.
Visual results have been polarizing. While some users praised the increased photorealism and effects on foliage, others described the output as deep fried, uncanny, or horrifying. Some testers specifically noted distortions on character faces, a phenomenon they dubbed yassification, leading to a consensus among some that the current state is objectively horrendous and essentially unusable. The implementation currently lacks support for HDR and Ray Reconstruction.
