Sam Altman Warns Against Concentrated AI Control

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that artificial intelligence could eventually be controlled by a small group of individuals or companies, which would deprive the general public of influence over the technology's development. Speaking on David Senra's podcast, Altman stated that society and AI models are going to co-evolve and argued that the public should maintain deep control over the future.

Altman cautioned against trading liberty for safety, a position that contrasts with the views of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. While Altman emphasizes individual autonomy and predicts an unprecedented boom in small business creation, Amodei has advocated for increased government regulation to mitigate risks to national security and critical infrastructure.

The debate also encompasses the use of open-weight models. Meta and Microsoft argue these models are essential for competing with China, and OpenAI released its own open-weight models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, last year. In contrast, Anthropic has declined to endorse the use of open-weight models.
