SpaceX Seeks Multibillion-Dollar AI Infrastructure Deal With Pentagon

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is expanding its operations into artificial intelligence infrastructure, seeking a multibillion-dollar capacity agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to manage classified AI workloads. This potential deal would build upon an existing partnership between the two entities that already encompasses rocket launches, satellite communications, and missile-tracking services. The Department of Defense is currently pursuing increased cloud computing capacity to support intelligence agencies and military AI applications.

To compete with cloud providers like CoreWeave, SpaceX is offering lower prices to AI customers. The company has recently secured capacity agreements worth up to $82 billion with partners including Anthropic, Google Cloud, and Reflection AI. Specifically, Anthropic agreed in May to utilize the full computing capacity of the Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, and Alphabet's Google signed a multi-year cloud services deal in June.

Despite these commercial gains, the AI segment remains financially volatile. In 2025, the division posted an operating loss of $6.4 billion against $3.2 billion in revenue. SpaceX faces stiff competition for government contracts, as Amazon has announced a potential $50 billion investment in supercomputing capacity dedicated to U.S. government clients.
