EU Court Rejects Stripchat Challenge to VLOP Designation

The General Court of the European Union rejected a legal challenge by Stripchat regarding its designation as a very large online platform under the Digital Services Act.

The European Union General Court rejected a legal challenge by Stripchat, an adult content platform, regarding its designation as a very large online platform under the Digital Services Act. The platform, a subsidiary of the Cyprus-based company Technius, contested the European Commission's calculation of its user base, which triggered the designation based on specific user count benchmarks.

The court ruled that the European Commission provided adequate reasons for the decision. This designation requires Stripchat and two other adult content companies to implement more stringent measures to combat illegal and harmful content.

The ruling exposes the company to significant financial risk, as breaches of the Digital Services Act can result in fines of up to 6 per cent of its global turnover. Stripchat retains the option to appeal the ruling on matters of law to the EU Court of Justice.
