SpaceX Lock-up Ends With 911 Million Shares Eligible for Sale

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ends a lock-up period on August 6, making 911.5 million employee and investor shares eligible for sale amid stock volatility.

Up to 911.5 million shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. held by employees and early investors will become eligible for sale on Thursday, August 6, 2026. This first wave of shares marks the end of a lock-up period and represents approximately 140% of the 639 million shares originally released during the company's initial public offering.

The stock has experienced significant volatility leading up to the unlock. As of August 4, the price fell to $114.53, which is approximately 15% below its $135 IPO price and 43% below its closing high of $201.80. This decline has coincided with heavy short-selling activity, with S3 Partners estimating that 219.3 million shares were sold short as of July 29.

SpaceX utilized a staggered lock-up structure to manage the release of equity. While the first wave unlocks this Thursday, additional restrictions will lift through December 8. Approximately 60% of the company's shares, including the stake held by Elon Musk, will remain restricted until mid-2027.
