Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt sparked public debate after suggesting that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has become too seamless. In an interview with Stateline, Stitt argued that receiving government benefits should carry "a little stigma" and "embarrassment," and suggested that residents utilize local food banks before seeking state aid.

Hunger Free Oklahoma condemned the remarks as "astoundingly uninformed." The organization noted that more than 500,000 Oklahomans rely on SNAP monthly, yet the state's food insecurity rate remains at 17%. Advocates warned that Stitt's comments could discourage eligible residents from applying for essential aid due to shame.

Leadership from local food security organizations emphasized the scale of the crisis. Chris Bernard of Hunger Free Oklahoma stated that SNAP provides more than a billion dollars in direct aid to the state annually. Additionally, Aaron AJ Johnson of Oasis Fresh Market highlighted the acute need facing families during the summer months.
