Jharkhand Police File FIRs Against 900 After Student Clashes
Jharkhand police registered multiple FIRs against hundreds of students following protests over recruitment examination cancellations and a subsequent High Court stay.
Police in Jharkhand filed three First Information Reports (FIRs) against 28 named individuals and approximately 900 unnamed people following widespread clashes between job aspirants and law enforcement. The unrest began on August 21 at Gandhi Maidan in Ranchi, where thousands of students organized by the JPSC-JSSC Reform Forum attempted to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The protests were triggered by a Jharkhand High Court decision to stay the state government's cancellation of several recruitment examinations and appointments.
Clashes escalated into scuffles and police lathi-charges in Ranchi, Giridih, and Hazaribag. While police officials stated that force was used only after protesters violated designated routes, student leaders accused the government of betrayal and deception. In Hazaribag, students responded to the violence by conducting a peaceful silent march on August 22, handing flower garlands and pens to officials to distance themselves from allegations of misconduct.
Babulal Marandi, the Jharkhand Assembly Leader of Opposition, condemned the police response as hooliganism and accused the administration of suppressing individual voices. He specifically cited the detention of an NGO leader as evidence of torture, though police maintained her arrest was unrelated to the demonstrations. The JPSC-JSSC Reform Forum continues to demand systemic reforms in the state's examination process.
