Newsom Reports 12,000 EV Sales via MyFirstEV Program

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that nearly 12,000 Californians purchased electric vehicles through the MyFirstEV rebate program since its August launch.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that nearly 12,000 Californians have purchased electric vehicles through the MyFirstEV rebate program. Launched in August by Newsom and the California Air Resources Board, the initiative provides instant point-of-sale discounts of $3,500 for new zero-emission vehicles and $1,750 for used ones. The program is supported by a $135.5 million state investment matched by automakers, creating $271 million in total savings.

Newsom also introduced the 2026 Zero-Emission Vehicle Market Development Strategy to manage the growth of infrastructure and the workforce. According to the California Energy Commission, the state has installed 224,438 shared charging ports, reaching nearly 50% of its 2030 target. Zero-emission vehicles accounted for 19.1% of new car sales in California during the third quarter of 2026, bringing the state total to nearly 2.8 million vehicles.

Secretary for Environmental Protection Yana Garcia advocated for continued investment to lower costs and protect public health. Lauren Sanchez, Chair of the California Air Resources Board, stated that the early success of the rebate program is supercharging progress toward cleaner air and reduced vehicle pollution.
