Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever Resigns Over Budget Deadlock

Prime Minister Bart De Wever offered his resignation to King Philippe after coalition partners failed to agree on a plan to plug a 10 billion euro budget gap.

Prime Minister Bart De Wever offered his resignation to King Philippe on Monday, November 2, following the collapse of budget negotiations within his five-party coalition. The government failed to reach a compromise on how to address a 10 billion euro budget gap, leaving the country unable to meet European Union deficit and debt benchmarks.

The deadlock reflects a fundamental divide between the Flemish nationalist N-VA and liberal MR, who advocate for spending cuts in sectors like healthcare, and socialist and centrist partners who demand higher wealth taxes. De Wever warned that failure to implement these measures would create an "interest snowball" where Belgium must take on new loans simply to service existing debt interest.

Belgium's 2025 deficit reached 5.2% of GDP, significantly exceeding the EU's 3% limit. The Council of the European Union has set a 2029 deadline for the country to end its excessive deficit. While De Wever attempted to stabilize financial markets as government bond interest rates rose, the future of the administration remains uncertain. King Philippe may decline the resignation and instead mandate a final round of negotiations to avoid the possibility of a new coalition or fresh elections.
