Swedish Speaker Tasks Magdalena Andersson With Government Formation
Speaker Andreas Norlen has mandated Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson to explore forming a new government following the September 13 parliamentary elections.
Swedish Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlen has tasked Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democratic Party, with exploring the formation of a new government. This exploratory mandate begins on October 5, with a report due by October 12, although Andersson may request an extension to continue negotiations.
The assignment follows the September 13 parliamentary elections, where the Social Democratic Party remained the largest single party with 99 seats. However, the opposition bloc secured a parliamentary majority, holding 176 of the 349 total seats. Andersson had previously returned an exploratory mandate due to complications surrounding the election of the parliament speaker, but Norlen stated that the current distribution of seats remains the basis for the new assignment.
Outgoing Prime Minister and Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson has resigned in the wake of the election results. A formal vote for a new prime minister will take place once the exploratory process concludes.
