Malaysia Denies Financial Support Agreement With AirAsia

The Ministry of Finance of Malaysia denied making any financial commitments or providing public fund injections to AirAsia despite reports of support talks.

The Ministry of Finance of Malaysia announced on October 19 that the government has not entered into any agreement or commitment to provide financial assistance, loans, guarantees, or public fund injections to AirAsia. This clarification follows reports that the budget airline sought government support to mitigate financial losses driven by rising jet fuel prices, which are linked to the US-Israeli war with Iran.

AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes stated that discussions with the government focused on aviation-related costs, including airport charges and fuel, rather than direct financial aid. The ministry acknowledged the airline's importance to the national aviation sector, noting that AirAsia handles roughly 60 percent of domestic passenger movements and provides critical connectivity to Sabah and Sarawak.

The government maintained that any future requests for support from any sector will be evaluated based on fiscal sustainability, the protection of public funds, and the public interest.
