US Political Campaigns Spend $17 Million on AI Vendors
Federal Election Commission data shows US political campaigns spent $17 million on AI vendors since 2020, with spending patterns splitting along partisan lines.
The Federal Election Commission reports that U.S. political campaigns have spent at least $17 million on AI technology vendors since 2020. While general-purpose tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude are utilized for research and administrative tasks, higher expenditures are directed toward specialized voter engagement and text messaging vendors such as Daisychain and Campaign Nucleus.
Spending patterns reveal a distinct partisan divide. Anthropic's Claude is more popular among Democrats, whereas Republicans primarily utilize xAI and Campaign Nucleus. The Republican Party stands as the largest overall buyer of OpenAI services.
Data from the Wesleyan Media Project suggests the actual scale of AI integration is significantly larger than FEC disclosures indicate. The project identified at least 164 political ads in the current cycle featuring AI-generated media, supported by approximately $80 million in ad spending. This gap suggests that a substantial portion of AI costs is routed through consultants and media firms that are not required to provide itemized disclosures.
