Baltic Dry Index Rises Slightly Amid Weekly Decline
The Baltic Exchange reported a small daily increase in dry bulk freight rates on Friday despite significant losses across the week.
The Baltic Exchange reported that the Baltic Dry Bulk Freight Index rose by 8 points, or 0.3%, to reach 3,148 points on Friday. This marked the second consecutive daily increase for the index, though the gain was modest compared to broader weekly trends.
The daily uptick was primarily driven by the capesize index, which climbed 0.6% to 5,042 points. This increase raised the average daily earnings for capesize vessels to $42,228. In contrast, the panamax index fell 0.3% to 2,372 points, resulting in a decrease in average daily earnings for those vessels to $21,349.
Despite the Friday recovery, the overall Baltic index recorded an 8.1% decline for the week. The capesize index experienced the most significant weekly loss at 12.8%, while the panamax index dropped 1.5% over the same period.
