Syria Dismantles Hezbollah Cell Plotting Official Assassinations

The Syrian Interior Ministry arrested 11 people and seized weapons after foiling a Hezbollah-directed plot to assassinate high-ranking government officials.

The Interior Ministry of Syria dismantled a Hezbollah-linked terrorist cell on May 6, 2026, after a three-month monitoring period. Security forces conducted coordinated raids across Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Tartus, Latakia, and Hama, resulting in 11 arrests. Authorities seized a cache of weaponry including drones, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, automatic rifles, and improvised explosive devices.

Investigators allege the cell was led by Mohammad Mahmoud Abdul Hamid, a former affiliate of the Bashar al-Assad intelligence service. The suspects reportedly entered Syria two months prior after receiving specialized training in explosives and unmanned aerial vehicles in southern Lebanon. This operation follows other recent tensions, including the April interception of a Hezbollah missile truck and a foiled attempt to target Rabbi Michael Khoury in Damascus.

Hezbollah categorically denied the accusations, asserting it does not work to destabilize the security of other countries. The crackdown reflects the hostile relationship between the organization and the transitional government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which took power after the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024. Syrian officials, including Foreign Ministry representative Obayda Ghadban, have characterized both Iran and Israel as strategic enemies, as the government attempts to maintain neutrality and eliminate Iranian-backed proxies.
