Afghan Deportees Report Abuses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Afghan nationals deported from Pakistan report arbitrary detentions and extortion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of governor's rule and a state of emergency.

Afghan nationals deported from Pakistan report a surge in arbitrary detentions, midnight raids, and financial extortion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These abuses followed the Government of Pakistan imposing governor's rule and a state of emergency in the province. Deportees describe a hostile environment where police conduct frequent residential searches and demand bribes for the release of detainees.

Approximately 27,000 Afghan refugees have returned through the Torkham border terminal over the last three months, with relief efforts managed at the Omari Temporary Settlement.

In response to the influx, the Taliban-led Ministry of Urban Development and Housing in Afghanistan has distributed over 74,000 residential land plots across 22 provinces. The ministry also approved 37 development blueprints to facilitate the reintegration of returning families.
