Apple Unveils iOS 27 and AI-Powered Siri Overhaul
Apple launched iOS 27 and a redesigned Siri with on-screen awareness, though regulatory disputes with the EU and hardware limits restrict some AI features.
At WWDC 2026, Apple Inc. unveiled iOS 27 and a major overhaul of Siri, now integrated with Apple Intelligence. The new assistant features on-screen awareness and real-time object recognition, allowing it to perform multi-step tasks across apps using personal context. While the first developer beta includes productivity tools like a Safari "Notify Me" function and improved LLM-powered dictation, the advanced Siri AI is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and later models.
Beyond the keynote, reports indicate Apple is developing an Extensions API to allow third-party AI models from Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI to integrate with Siri. These extensions, along with a customizable Camera app and modular Apple Watch faces, were omitted from the event due to potential legal concerns and regulatory conflicts. Specifically, the European Commission has delayed the rollout of AI Siri in the EU, arguing that Apple failed to develop interoperability solutions that meet security standards.
Apple is also shifting its hardware support. While iOS 27 maintains support for the iPhone 11 series, the company is ending software support for 16 older devices across its iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac lines, with macOS 27 Golden Gate supporting only Apple Silicon. Meanwhile, developer betas hint at future hardware, including a foldable iPhone and a touchscreen MacBook.
