India and Armenia Sign Defense MoU to Expand Joint Production
Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh signed a defense industry MoU in Yerevan to shift bilateral ties toward joint research and production.
Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh conducted a two-day official visit to Yerevan, Armenia, from August 17 to 18, 2026, to strengthen bilateral strategic and security cooperation. The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the defense ministries of both nations, focusing on research, development, innovation, and shared production. Singh stated that India views the relationship as a "mutually beneficial partnership" rather than a simple buyer-seller dynamic.
During the visit, Singh met with Armenian Defence Minister Suren Papikyan, Minister of High Tech Industry Davit Tadevosyan, and Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Edvard Asryan. The two nations formally exchanged Terms of Reference to institutionalize Joint Services Staff Talks, establishing a new framework for direct cooperation between their respective general staffs. Discussions also covered potential new equipment contracts and annual maintenance agreements, building on Armenia's previous procurement of Indian Pinaka rockets and Swathi radar systems.
Singh also visited the Armenian Military Academy after Vazgen Sargsyan, where he inspected an Indian-assisted IT Lab and discussed capacity building for future security leaders. This engagement follows high-level talks in New Delhi in April 2026 and the 2025 appointment of India's first resident defense attaché in Yerevan, signaling Armenia's effort to diversify its defense procurement and India's expanding role in the South Caucasus region.
