Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Scrutiny Over Influencer Network

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under investigation for using a private Signal group to coordinate a network of 200 online creators to promote City Hall.

An investigation has uncovered that the administration of Zohran Mamdani maintains a network of nearly 200 online creators used to distribute City Hall information. The network evolved from the campaign-era Creators4Zohran group and is currently managed by city communications staff through a private Signal group titled NYC Creators Announcements.

While City Hall denies paying influencers for favorable coverage, the investigation found that some creators received taxpayer-funded compensation for advertising and public messaging campaigns. For example, the Department of Social Services spent over $100,000 this year on a social media campaign under a contract that predated the current mayor.

Government watchdogs have raised concerns regarding the lack of transparency surrounding the distribution of city funds and the use of encrypted messaging for official business. Critics argue that using Signal may violate public records retention laws. Mayor Mamdani stated his administration intends to comply with legal requirements governing city records and said officials would investigate and correct any failure to meet those requirements.
