Shareholders Approve Record $67 Billion Dominion NextEra Merger
Shareholders of Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy approved a $67 billion merger, the largest in U.S. history, pending regulatory and legislative review in Virginia.
Shareholders of Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy voted on Thursday to approve a proposed $67 billion merger, marking the largest utility merger in U.S. history. While the vote provides a critical milestone for the companies, the deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and requires approval from state and federal regulators.
The Virginia State Corporation Commission is currently evaluating the plan's impact on ratepayers, service quality, and corporate control. Governor Abigail Spanberger formally intervened in the process in August to advocate for the long-term interests of Virginia residents, stating that her administration would directly advocate for those impacted by the deal.
Parallel to the regulatory review, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in the Virginia General Assembly have called for a special session. Legislators seek a more comprehensive review of the merger's complexity and its potential effect on energy bills for consumers.
