Apple Announces Welcome Home Event for Smart Home Expansion

Apple will unveil a new smart home hub, updated HomePod mini, and new Apple TV on October 13 to challenge Amazon and Google.

Apple Inc. has announced a "Welcome Home" launch event for October 13 at 9 a.m. ET in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood. The event marks a major strategic push into the smart home market, led by CEO John Ternus, who assumed the role on September 1. The company is expected to debut a new smart home hub, codenamed J490 and referred to as the HomePad or HomeView, featuring a 6-inch square display on a tiltable metal arm. The hub will run a new operating system called homeOS and utilize facial and voice recognition to provide personalized content.

Alongside the hub, Apple will introduce a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K and a refreshed HomePod mini. Both devices will feature upgraded processors—potentially the A19 chipset—and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility to support a revamped Siri AI. This AI integration, developed with assistance from Google, aims to enable more natural interactions and better compete with assistants like Alexa and Gemini.

To broaden its ecosystem, Apple has entered a second-party development arrangement with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. LG will manufacture a suite of branded accessories, including video doorbells, smart locks with ultra-wideband technology, and security cameras. Schneider Electric is rumored to produce smart thermostats and sensors. While the first-party hardware debuts on October 13, these branded accessories are expected to reach consumers in mid-November. Apple is also developing a Proximity Control feature that allows iPhones to detect these gadgets via NFC and Bluetooth for immediate control through the Dynamic Island.
