Australia Announces 2.5 Billion Dollar Tomago Smelter Bailout

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Chris Minns will announce a 2.5 billion dollar joint bailout to ensure the viability of the Tomago aluminium smelter.

Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns are expected to announce a joint federal-state bailout of the Tomago aluminium smelter on Thursday. The agreement is valued at 2.5 billion dollars over 10 years, with the federal and state governments splitting the costs equally.

As part of the deal, the smelter's owners—including majority owner Rio Tinto Group, Gove Aluminium Finance Ltd., and Norsk Hydro ASA—will contribute at least 1 billion dollars for maintenance and capital improvements. The funding package addresses the site's viability in the face of volatile global trading and rising energy costs.

To support the facility's goal of becoming 100% renewable by 2030, the bailout includes power purchase agreements with Snowy Hydro to generate approximately 2.5GW of new energy supply. This intervention follows a pattern of government support for other metal processors, such as Nyrstar and Glencore.
