New Bedford City Council Meeting Collapses Over Police Surveillance

A New Bedford City Council meeting ended prematurely on Thursday night after residents disrupted discussions regarding the police department's use of Flock Safety automated license plate readers. The unrest followed a decision by the New Bedford Police Department to pause the camera system after an audit triggered internal investigations, including the suspension of Officer Emily Pacheco for allegedly using the technology to track her ex-girlfriend.

Ryan Pereira, the Council President, suspended the session after the meeting collapsed into uproar. The disruption occurred as Councilor Brian Gomes attempted to present a motion intended to enhance policies and strengthen community trust. Residents booed and jeered Gomes during the presentation, leading to the premature end of the proceedings.

Pereira expressed disappointment over the lack of decorum and the inability of the council to complete its business. He has scheduled a special public meeting for the following Tuesday to address the unfinished business regarding the surveillance technology.
