Equinix Increases Spending to $7 Billion Amid Regulatory Risks
Equinix is prioritizing smaller data centers to bypass potential U.S. regulatory thresholds while shifting investment toward Asian markets to meet rising enterprise demand.
Equinix has increased its capital spending to $7 billion to satisfy demand from Fortune 500 companies and large enterprises. To mitigate regulatory risks in the United States, the company is prioritizing the development of smaller data centers, typically ranging from 30 to 60 megawatts.
This strategy aims to keep facilities below the 100-megawatt threshold often targeted by U.S. legislative proposals. Company leadership noted that staying below this limit helps avoid restrictions that could be implemented by newly elected governors, which might otherwise increase costs or delay projects starting in 2028.
Investment is simultaneously shifting toward Asia as hyperscalers seek available land and power capacity. However, this expansion faces local hurdles, as authorities in Thailand and Australia have paused some projects to evaluate how data center energy requirements impact other sectors. South Korea has been identified as another key market for additional capacity in the region.
