Rogers and El-Sayed Battle for Critical Michigan Senate Seat
Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed compete in a high-stakes Michigan Senate race that could determine control of the U.S. Senate.
The 2026 U.S. Senate race in Michigan has become a central contest for control of the upper chamber. Republican nominee Mike Rogers, a former FBI agent and House Intelligence Committee Chairman, is challenging Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed for the seat.
A victory for Rogers would significantly increase the probability of the GOP preserving its Senate majority. Conversely, a Democratic loss in Michigan would require the party to secure a higher net gain of seats in other states to seize control of the chamber.
Rogers is currently attempting to attract Jewish and Black voters who have expressed discomfort with the political positions of El-Sayed. Meanwhile, El-Sayed is expected to outperform previous Democratic candidates among Muslim and Arab American voters.
Political analysts view Oakland County as the primary benchmark for the race. Because of its high vote volume and large Jewish population, the county serves as a bellwether; if El-Sayed fails to maintain a margin of victory similar to the 12-point lead Elissa Slotkin held over Rogers in 2024, Rogers' chances of a statewide win increase.
