Bangladesh Marks Second Anniversary of July Mass Uprising

Bangladesh observed July Mass Uprising Day on August 5, 2026, marking the second anniversary of the student-led movement that ended the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina. The current administration characterized the previous government as fascist and autocratic, designating the anniversary as a day of victory for democratic political rights.

Tarique Rahman, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, inaugurated the July Memorial Museum at Ganabhaban in Dhaka to document the resistance against autocracy and honor the sacrifices of martyrs and fighters. During the ceremony, former interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus described the museum as the starting point for a new Bangladesh and urged the youth to document these memories to ensure the nation does not lose its way.

National commemorations included a reception for martyrs' families at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre and nationwide processions, cultural performances, and special prayers. Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed issued a call for the country to remain united in building a justice-based, humane, and discrimination-free nation. To mark the occasion, the government provided children with free access to museums and recreational facilities.
