JEPQ ETF Lags QQQ Due to Income Strategy Caps
JPMorgan's JEPQ ETF is underperforming the Invesco QQQ Trust as its option-selling strategy limits gains during sharp market rallies.
The JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPQ) is experiencing a performance gap relative to the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) because of its specific income-generating mechanism. To provide a headline yield of approximately 10.7%, the fund sells call options via equity-linked notes, a strategy that generates monthly cash flow but caps the fund's upside potential during significant market surges.
This trade-off became evident on August 27, when Nvidia Inc. saw its market value increase by roughly $442 billion following a positive revenue growth forecast. During that session, JEPQ captured only about 63% of the move seen by QQQ. This trend is reflected in year-to-date performance, with JEPQ returning approximately 11% on price compared to 17% for QQQ.
Beyond price performance, the fund's distributions are treated as ordinary income, which increases the tax burden for investors holding the asset in taxable accounts. Consequently, the fund is positioned as a viable option primarily for retirees seeking consistent monthly income within tax-advantaged accounts.
