BBC Considers Blocking iPlayer for Non-License Fee Payers

The BBC is considering blocking access to its iPlayer streaming service for British viewers who do not pay the £180 annual license fee. During an all-staff call, Chief Customer Officer Kerris Bright described the potential implementation of a verification gate as a future opportunity to stem funding losses, though she warned that current data suggests the move is not a silver bullet for increasing revenue.

Bright noted that the cost of implementation would likely exceed the revenue gained, as most iPlayer users already pay the fee. She cautioned that requiring users to provide license details would create a difficult experience and unnecessary friction for paying customers. These discussions occur as the broadcaster faces a funding crisis, with over half a million people opting out of the fee in the last financial year, leading to an estimated annual loss of over £1 billion from evasion and refusal.

Director General Matt Brittin characterized the current license fee as a busted flush and a yesterday's model, stating that the corporation is negotiating a new charter with the government. Proposed alternatives include a compulsory household levy or expanding the fee to include subscribers of services like Netflix and Disney+, a prospect opposed by the Motion Picture Association. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has suggested reforming the license fee and introducing tiered pricing options. To encourage payments, the broadcaster recently launched a celebrity-led promotional campaign titled 'What Has The BBC Ever Done For Me?' during the World Cup final.
