U.S. National Debt Surpasses GDP for First Time Since 1946

The United States national debt has exceeded its gross domestic product, with the Congressional Budget Office projecting interest payments to reach $20.1 trillion by 2036.

The Congressional Budget Office reports that the United States national debt has surpassed the country's gross domestic product for fiscal 2026. Debt held by the public reached approximately $32.4 trillion against an economic output of $32.2 trillion, resulting in a debt-to-GDP ratio of 100.1 percent. This marks the first time since 1946 that the fiscal year-end ratio has reached triple digits.

Total gross debt now exceeds $40.5 trillion, following a fiscal 2026 deficit of roughly $2 trillion. This growth follows the July 2025 passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which raised the statutory debt limit to $41 trillion. The CBO projects the debt-to-GDP ratio will continue to climb, reaching 120 percent by 2036.

Financial projections indicate the U.S. Treasury will spend $20.1 trillion on interest payments between 2026 and 2036. Annual interest costs are expected to rise from $1.2 trillion in 2026 to nearly $2.5 trillion by 2036, surpassing projected defense spending of $1.1 trillion. Officials attribute the soaring bond yields and increased borrowing costs to economic instability linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
